Feature-length documentary about the world of live-action role-playing. What do players experience when they step into another reality for a few days?
About the project
Larp is a modern art form and entertainment, improvised live role-playing in a defined place and time. The documentary Roleplayers delves into what remains hidden from every observer: the subjective experience of players inside the game. The film follows three first-time players venturing into completely different worlds, from Czechoslovak legionnaires in Siberia to French nobility in the 18th century to a Polish larp set in the world of The Witcher. It asks a fundamental question: is larp a phenomenon for a small group of enthusiasts, or a new form of entertainment for the 21st century? Directed by Michal Matulík, screenplay by Pavel Gotthard.
My role
As editor of the entire documentary, I worked with material shot in 4K CinemaDNG RAW. My task was to weave together three parallel storylines, each from a different world, with different rhythms and emotions, while maintaining the tension between the camera's external perspective and the players' inner experience. The result is 70 minutes long and exists in both Czech and English versions.
